invasion-of-privacyThe Problem

AT&T has recently begun asking its employees to “Review” a new policy which requires reporting on- and off-duty misconduct. We feel this policy vastly intrudes into the personal, private lives of our members and their families. Because AT&T has made their policy “AT&T Proprietary (Restricted),” we are not allowed to reproduce it here, but we can tell you that, depending on where you live and what your job-title is, you may be required to report any involvement with law-enforcement, even jaywalking(!) whether or not you are even guilty. Even if it happens off the clock, on your own time and even if you are innocent! In this policy, AT&T warns that, even before it is determined that you are guilty of the offense, regardless of what the offense is or whether it took place on or off the clock, AT&T may still terminate you.

Imagine a scenario where you are in a dispute with a neighbor or with your ex; as can sometimes happen, police are called and charges are filed against you, right or wrong. Often, cooler heads will later prevail and charges are dropped. However, if you work at AT&T, you are required to report all misconduct, upon pain of termination! So, now AT&T management knows all about the incident, which may involve your family, you, your neighbors, etc. If AT&T decides that the situation could affect the Company, or your work, AT&T may fire you even though the charges were dropped/dismissed!

Your Local is attempting to get more information from AT&T on why it needs so much sensitive personal information about its employees’ personal lives, and potentially the lives of their families. We believe that AT&T should have submitted such a draconian policy to the CWA leadership during the just-completed bargaining so that the Union would have a chance to bargain this important issue on behalf of its members. Instead, AT&T just completed bargaining with CWA District 4 without ever mentioning that it wanted so much access into the personal lives of CWA families, and that our jobs would be on the line subject to the whim of HR.

Help us fight this..

We strongly urge our members to decline to review this policy. If your supervisor orders you to do so, politely refuse and ask your supervisor if it is mandatory. If your supervisor says that it is mandatory, then comply with your supervisor’s direction and immediately file a grievance through your union steward.

large_tomlincry-300x298We have received many calls from employees and retirees about AT&T’s recent changes to its billing practices. CWA District 4 has received the below information from AT&T. Please understand that employee/retiree discounts are not bargained by the CWA; thus, they are not grievable! (..and if you are thinking, “Why doesn’t CWA bargain this?” then next ask yourself what AT&T might demand in return!)

danger-low_wage_construction350x127pxNo doubt most of us have heard that prevailing wage is under attack in Michigan. There are folks out collecting signatures across Michigan as we speak. It is our understanding they are telling potential signers that the petition is to raise minimum wage, fix the roads, as well as many other things to encourage people to sign. They are showing up at schools, libraries, outside Secretary of State offices, main streets, and various other locations where there will be a lot of foot traffic. Governor Snyder has told the Republican leadership he will veto any bill that comes across his desk that will eliminate prevailing wage. Because of this, those who favoring doing away with prevailing wage laws in Michigan have crafted this sneaky petition drive; if enough signatures are gathered and the law goes into effect, the Republican legislature will have a veto-proof way to lower the wages of thousands of skilled-tradesmen and -women. This will then become one more reason for our most skilled workers to leave Michigan, and that’s no good for anyone except a few greedy fat-cats. Please share this with your co-workers, friends and family. Encouraging them to not sign this petition, and if they are unclear, ask them to actually read the petition or ask a question for clarification.

att-dtvLast week CWA International President Chris Shelton hosted a conference call with all Districts and CWA General Counsel Jody Calemine to discuss the announcement by AT&T of our Premises Technicians installing DirecTV services. After a lengthy discussion, it was decided that CWA Headquarters will prepare a detailed information request pertaining to the announcement. Attorney Calemine will review all AT&T labor agreements to see what type of leverage we have to enter into bargaining over working outside the job description and a potential wage increase. During this discussion, it was learned that CWA District 9 (California, Nevada and Hawaii) did negotiate additional pay for their Premises Technicians that included installation of DirecTV.
We will keep you updated on this important issue as we obtain more information. Please share with your fellow members; we may need to mobilize as in bargaining to get AT&T to move on this issue.

sat-tvWe have been notified that the Company plans to roll out a training schedule for the DirecTV product.  This is a nationwide roll-out and all districts are being notified. We understand that, in all areas except the Midwest, training will begin next week and in the Midwest probably a week later.  Locals in the other districts are being covered today and we believe Locals in the Midwest will be covered next Monday.  As you know, the deal with AT&T and DirecTV is not complete yet so we are still limited on information.
The issue has been referred to CWA National President Shelton since this is nationwide. The Company informed CWA that it plans a pretty aggressive training schedule, with 750 being trained per week around the country. We have no information on numbers and locations in District 4 but the Company most likely will share those details with Locals as they cover them. We have told the Company they should offer training by volunteers and seniority but, so far, have no agreements on anything yet. We are asking all members to let the Company know that any training offered on DirecTV should be by seniority and by volunteer. If this is not the case, or your manager seems to be acting otherwise, please involve a steward immediately.

vote-ballot-boxCWA/AT&T Midwest ratification results
51.6% Yes, 48.4% No, with 56.8% return
With a majority of eligible voters participating, members that work for AT&T Midwest Core and Global COS voted in favor of ratifying the tentative agreements reached on May 13, 2015 with AT&T.  The vote count was conducted by 36 members from 13 different locals across the District.
“Although it was a close vote, it shows the continued appreciation our members have for the work of our bargaining committee,” stated District 4 Vice President Linda Hinton.  “In these tough times, our committee was able to get a contract that enhanced both our employment security and our standard of living.”
The contractual wage increases are retroactive to April 12, 2015, and the benefit changes do not take effect until January 1, 2016.  We don’t know yet the exact date when the raises will be reflected in paychecks, but expect it within weeks, and the retroactive pay a few weeks following that.  As soon as we have a certain date, we will advise Local Presidents.
In Solidarity,
Linda L. Hinton
Vice President
