Call to action!

This will take all of us!!

In our efforts to assist CWA District 4 and CWA International in their work to secure our members’ employment with AT&T, CWA Local 4034 is seeking information from our most valuable source – the membership. We know that all employees, of both AT&T and DirecTV contractors such as Goodman, are plagued with uncertainty due to the lack of clear communication from both employers. We are seeking to remedy that at the bargaining table and one of the most valuable tools when bargaining is information. If you are an AT&T employee or a DirecTV employee, you may have information that can help all of us secure good jobs for us and our families. We are asking you to share that information with us so that we can pass the information on to CWA leadership. We believe this will help us secure our employment during these chaotic times.

It doesn't have to be this way!

It doesn’t have to be this way!

We are asking that you email anything you think would be useful information to have when bargaining this work. Rather than use a web-based form to collect this information, we are asking that you send any information to a special email address we have built: directv@cwa4034.org. This will enable you to send your information as well as any material you think we need to know about things that will impact the lives and families of the employees of both companies. And, though any employee who communicates with a union about their employer is protected from retaliation by the employer under federal law, we will keep your information confidential unless you tell us otherwise.

Some examples might include:

  • Contractors doing your work, in or out of your area
  • Information on AT&T procedures for installing/servicing DirecTV
  • Information on DirecTV procedures for installing/servicing DirecTV or any AT&T products
  • Information related to safety procedures (or being directed to do work that is not safe)
  • Customer service issues for either DirecTV or AT&T customers related to the merger
  • Any other items or information you think would help CWA bargain this work for the affected employees

CWA Local 4034

Dear CWA 4034 Member,

2014 UW HeartOn behalf of the United Way and CWA Local 4034, I would like to send a heartfelt thank you to those of you who have taken the time to contribute to this year’s campaign. United Way believes investing in our community is an important responsibility. When you give to United Way your return on investment is more children receiving a quality education, more families with enough income to remain independent and more seniors with the support they need for healthy aging.

Our campaign will wrap up on Oct 9th. If you haven’t already, please take a few minutes to pledge your support. Remember, pledges will not automatically rollover this year as they have in the past, all employees must login and update their contributions. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Thank you again for supporting the United Way!

LyingFingersCross_I_swearYou might be aware, especially in Uverse, that the company has devised a digital business card and app for Premises Technicians. The app is capable of forwarding the card, including the technician’s photo, to a customer prior to arriving on the job. The company has begun training on the digital businesscard and its use.

We went to the company to ask for more details and express our concern over the possible negative effects that this could have on our members, such as identity theft. We were informed that it was strictly voluntary, but this still did not address our concerns.

We have heard that there are some managers trying to portray this as being mandatory, but it is completely VOLUNTARY. So, let your steward know if you are having any issues with managers saying that it is mandatory and if the ones that were misled are having any issues with stopping their participation in the program. We will take immediate action

invasion-of-privacyThe Problem

AT&T has recently begun asking its employees to “Review” a new policy which requires reporting on- and off-duty misconduct. We feel this policy vastly intrudes into the personal, private lives of our members and their families. Because AT&T has made their policy “AT&T Proprietary (Restricted),” we are not allowed to reproduce it here, but we can tell you that, depending on where you live and what your job-title is, you may be required to report any involvement with law-enforcement, even jaywalking(!) whether or not you are even guilty. Even if it happens off the clock, on your own time and even if you are innocent! In this policy, AT&T warns that, even before it is determined that you are guilty of the offense, regardless of what the offense is or whether it took place on or off the clock, AT&T may still terminate you.

Imagine a scenario where you are in a dispute with a neighbor or with your ex; as can sometimes happen, police are called and charges are filed against you, right or wrong. Often, cooler heads will later prevail and charges are dropped. However, if you work at AT&T, you are required to report all misconduct, upon pain of termination! So, now AT&T management knows all about the incident, which may involve your family, you, your neighbors, etc. If AT&T decides that the situation could affect the Company, or your work, AT&T may fire you even though the charges were dropped/dismissed!

Your Local is attempting to get more information from AT&T on why it needs so much sensitive personal information about its employees’ personal lives, and potentially the lives of their families. We believe that AT&T should have submitted such a draconian policy to the CWA leadership during the just-completed bargaining so that the Union would have a chance to bargain this important issue on behalf of its members. Instead, AT&T just completed bargaining with CWA District 4 without ever mentioning that it wanted so much access into the personal lives of CWA families, and that our jobs would be on the line subject to the whim of HR.

Help us fight this..

We strongly urge our members to decline to review this policy. If your supervisor orders you to do so, politely refuse and ask your supervisor if it is mandatory. If your supervisor says that it is mandatory, then comply with your supervisor’s direction and immediately file a grievance through your union steward.

large_tomlincry-300x298We have received many calls from employees and retirees about AT&T’s recent changes to its billing practices. CWA District 4 has received the below information from AT&T. Please understand that employee/retiree discounts are not bargained by the CWA; thus, they are not grievable! (..and if you are thinking, “Why doesn’t CWA bargain this?” then next ask yourself what AT&T might demand in return!)

sat-tvWe have been notified that the Company plans to roll out a training schedule for the DirecTV product.  This is a nationwide roll-out and all districts are being notified. We understand that, in all areas except the Midwest, training will begin next week and in the Midwest probably a week later.  Locals in the other districts are being covered today and we believe Locals in the Midwest will be covered next Monday.  As you know, the deal with AT&T and DirecTV is not complete yet so we are still limited on information.
The issue has been referred to CWA National President Shelton since this is nationwide. The Company informed CWA that it plans a pretty aggressive training schedule, with 750 being trained per week around the country. We have no information on numbers and locations in District 4 but the Company most likely will share those details with Locals as they cover them. We have told the Company they should offer training by volunteers and seniority but, so far, have no agreements on anything yet. We are asking all members to let the Company know that any training offered on DirecTV should be by seniority and by volunteer. If this is not the case, or your manager seems to be acting otherwise, please involve a steward immediately.

vote-ballot-boxCWA/AT&T Midwest ratification results
51.6% Yes, 48.4% No, with 56.8% return
With a majority of eligible voters participating, members that work for AT&T Midwest Core and Global COS voted in favor of ratifying the tentative agreements reached on May 13, 2015 with AT&T.  The vote count was conducted by 36 members from 13 different locals across the District.
“Although it was a close vote, it shows the continued appreciation our members have for the work of our bargaining committee,” stated District 4 Vice President Linda Hinton.  “In these tough times, our committee was able to get a contract that enhanced both our employment security and our standard of living.”
The contractual wage increases are retroactive to April 12, 2015, and the benefit changes do not take effect until January 1, 2016.  We don’t know yet the exact date when the raises will be reflected in paychecks, but expect it within weeks, and the retroactive pay a few weeks following that.  As soon as we have a certain date, we will advise Local Presidents.

Linda L. Hinton

2015-05-06 Cleveland Banner (2)The Company spent the majority of the day in communications with bargaining chair Jerry Schaeff and Vice President Hinton on the current status of negotiations; among other issues.

The bargaining team intends on meeting with the Company tomorrow anticipating a new attitude toward compromise and a real focus on reaching a fair agreement.  We will see.

It goes without saying; the bargaining team appreciates all of the support they continue to receive from the membership.  Negotiations never go without its challenges and we will get through this round as we have in every round that preceded it.

Continue to mobilize while your bargaining team continues to fight at the table and we will bring home a fair contract!

Solidarity!
